Abstract
Sankofa is an Akan word and philosophical idea. The Akan people originate in Ghana, West Africa. Sankofa is imaged as a bird that flies forward while looking backward and simultaneously holding an egg in its mouth. It is symbolic of drawing from the past those lessons and experiences that are important for current and future progress and growth and for assuring that the knowledge and wisdom gleaned from experience are passed on to future generations.
