Since the turn of the 20th Century our society has experienced important advances in medical science. During the first half of the century, the development of antibiotics and increasingly sophisticated medical treatment programs have combatted illnesses
such as small pox, tuberculosis, typhoid, cholera, polio, hepatitis and plague which were once regarded as terminal illnesses Yet, more striking advances have emerged gradually over the last half of this century in the form of a highly technocratic practice of medicine.
