Abstract
This study calculated mortality rates for African Americans in the central Harlem Health district of New York City, and compared them to those of whites. Between the ages of 25-44 black males in Harlem are 6 times more likely to die than white males in the U.S.Cardiovascular disease, cirrhosis of the liver, homicide and cancer are the main causes of the excess deaths.
